What Every Consumer Should Know About Produce

Have you ever wondered what the numbers on the produce stickers mean? I never gave these stickers a second thought, until I went to school to become a health coach. As I started conducting my own research on these mysterious numbers, I became acutely aware about what I was putting into my body.

These stickers (PLU- Price Look Up Code) will tell you whether the fruit was organically grown, genetically modified, or produced with chemical fertilizers, herbicides or fungicides.

Sstickers that have 5 digits and begin with the number 8 are genetically engineered (meaning the genes have been manipulated to produce a bigger, brighter piece of fruit).

Stickers that have 4 digits and begin with the number 3 or 4 have been conventionally grown (meaning the produce was treated with chemicals, herbicides or fungicides.

Stickers that have 5 digits and begin with the number nine has been organically grown (meaning this produce is grown as natural as possible).

The next time you find yourself in the produce isle eyeing that delicious red apple, consider for a moment what those pesky stickers actually mean.
